Tug of War

Tug of War XVIII

Saturday, November 7, 2015

Eastport won 5 to 2, but the important part is that we raised a bunch of money for our benefiting charities: the Annapolis Community Boating, Civil Air Patrol, Eastport Elementary School, Seeds 4 Success, Special Olympics Maryland, Annapolis Elementary School, Annapolis Partnership, and the Annapolis Maritime Museum.

Details to come.

It was a damp and drizzly day but the rain couldn't stop the enthusiasm of the rivalry between Eastport and Annapolis! Thanks to everybody who made the event possible, in addition to the many, many volunteers on both the Eastport and Annapolis sides who worked on this for months (you know who you are). Among those who deserve a big public thank you:

All 12 bands -- they all played for FREE as a way of giving back to the community!

The Eastport Elementary School band's kids and parents.

The Civil Air Patrol youngsters who provided order on both sides.

SEAL Team 21403 who secured the Gulf of Eastport.

Sea-Tow, who provided the boat and manpower to carefully stream the rope in the harbor between Eastport and Annapolis.

Chesapeake Outdoor Group's volunteers.

Michael Hughes and John Frenaye who provided the trash talk between both sides.

Kenneth Tom who took awesome photos (that will be posted here shortly).

The sponsors listed in this graphic, which was created by Rick Guariglia, especially Severn Savings Bank, Lewnes' Steakhouse, BB&T, Davis' Pub, Dome Chartering, Boatyard Bar & Grill, Miller Lite, Porsche of Annapolis, Annapolis Elementary, Fordham and Dominion Brewing Company, and Bud Light.

tug logotuggers

The Tug of War is an over-the-water endurance event with teams of no more than 33 tuggers on each side pulling on a specially made rope that is extended over the Annapolis Harbor in as many as seven heats or tugs. The teams set up on opposite sides of Spa Creek (aka The Gulf of Eastport): In Eastport on Second Street, next to the Chart House restaurant, and on the Annapolis side, at Susan Campbell Park at City Dock.

After the tugs are over and the winning side is declared, it's party time with music, dancing, food, and drinks on both sides. And, on the Eastport side, there will be an officially sanctioned chili cookoff.

Proceeds from sponsorship, sale of beverages and food, and tugger fees will benefit a number of local charities. Over $100,000 has been raised since the Tug began!

About the Tug
and The Maritime Republic of Eastport (MRE*)

Billed as the longest International** Tug of War over water in the world , The Tug of War was originally conceived by the residents of Eastport in 1997 when the City of Annapolis used the excuse of a "public works project" to close the Spa Creek bridge that leads to Eastport from Annapolis. This unprovoked act of aggression on the part of the City of Annapolis had the effect of cutting off Eastport residents and businesses from the rest of the city. The somewhat fractious citizens of Eastport, feeling the sting of rejection by The City and, perhaps, somewhat emboldened by the generous pouring habits of a local bartender, decided to declare war against The City of Annapolis and secede. Thus, to the rallying cries of " Up The Republic," the micro-nation known as The Maritime Republic of Eastport was born.

In the ensuing years, although the Spa Creek Bridge has since re-opened, the once persecuted citizens of Eastport (Eastport-O-Ricans) have yearly declared a symbolic War of Independence against The City of Annapolis lest anyone forget this dark period of Annapolis-Eastport relations. The Tug of War, a celebration of the geographical and, some would argue, philosophical differences between Eastport and Annapolis, is a not-to-be missed maritime event unlike any other.

*The MRE is a registered 501(c)3 organization. All funds raised by the Tug and other MRE events are distributed to various charitable organizations in the Annapolis area. To date, over $500,000.00 has been raised.

**While other cities may claim to host a longer Tug, this is the only international Tug competition over water in the world. To read more about the history of The Maritime Republic of Eastport please visit here.
